It’s 2021! Yay! So it’s about time we got excited about all the new books that are being released this year. One of these books is a thriller about an Instamum who is being stalked by a mysterious stranger hellbent on getting revenge. *suspenseful music* I guarantee that you’ll be seeing a lot of hype around this book. And without any further ado, I give you: my review of People Like Her by Ellery Lloyd.
Many thanks to Pan Macmillan and NetGalley for providing me with a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

People Like Her is one of those slow burn, character driven thrillers that I’m not too keen on but enjoy under the right circumstances. (I enjoyed this one!) And while I wasn’t put off by its multiple POVs, I was put off by the fact that I liked the characters so little that I had no empathy for them whatsoever. No matter what awful things happened to them. Even when, under normal circumstances, these awful things would have been extremely triggering for me.
That said, this book made me very anxious. And yes, it has made me re-examine my online presence and what that might mean for our family.
All in all, People Like Her is an interesting debut. It’s full of twists that I didn’t see coming. But I will say that ultimately, I think it was too dark for me. The climax in particular made me feel physically ill. So while I would recommend this to thriller fans, I don’t think it’s suitable for all and I advise that prospective readers check content warnings before diving in!
- Character driven
- Super dark
- Dramatic plot twists
Read this if you…
- Want to explore the dangers of being an “influencer”
- Enjoy twisty thrillers
